Emergency Food Baskets

The Emergency Food Basket Program provides community members in financial difficulty with free access to nutritious and culturally appropriate food in a respectful and dignified manner. As of November 2021, participants have been able to select the foods they want in the Depot’s grocery-store-style space, following a budget determined by household size. This budget represents the monetary value of the food, and is used to guide participant’s selection of items, though there is no cost to the participant.

The Depot recognizes that what constitutes a healthy diet varies from one culture to another, and one individual to another. We prioritize foods that reflect a balanced diet based on The Canada Food Guide, Community Food Centres Canada’s “Good Food Principles,” current best practices and our diverse community’s needs and preferences. Because fresh vegetables and fruits are often less accessible to our participants, each budget has a minimum amount to be allocated towards the selection of produce, sourced in season from local producers.
