Annual appeal: Liliana’s Story

Annual appeal: Liliana’s Story

Gathering around a table with loved ones, sharing a meal, and creating memories—that’s the power of food.

At The Depot, we believe food is more than just a necessity; it’s a way to build a stronger, more connected community.

Let us introduce you to Liliana.

In 2021, Liliana moved to Montreal with her children, determined to build a new life despite the challenges ahead. Proud of her roots, she finds joy in sharing her love of food with others, both at home and at The Depot. A trained pastry chef, Liliana dreams of one day opening her own pastry shop.

“This is the magic table where I met Houda,” Liliana says, recalling her first encounter with The Depot’s Community Engagement Coordinator just weeks after arriving in Montreal. “In Houda, I found exactly what I needed when I was new here—support.”

From that moment, Liliana became an active participant in our programs, sharing her passion for food and her culinary skills with others. As a pastry chef, she brings a unique blend of tradition and creativity to everything she does.

“I’m very happy when I share the food of my people,” Liliana smiles.

Though Liliana now works full-time and her children are busy with their studies, her connection to The Depot remains strong. “Even if I don’t come by as often, if I knock on the door, I know someone will open it,” she shares.

With your support, we continue to stand alongside Liliana and are excited for the day her dream of opening her own pastry shop comes true.

Unfortunately, like many in our community, Liliana and her family are feeling the effects of rising costs. Housing is expensive, food prices are soaring, and it’s becoming harder for families to make ends meet. In fact, 1 in 6 people in Quebec face food insecurity. Behind these statistics are real people like Liliana, facing tough choices every day.

This is where your support for The Depot makes a difference.

When Liliana first came to us, she found more than just food—she found a welcoming community, a space to share her culture and skills, and the support she needed. “When I have a problem, I come here,” Liliana says. “And when I leave, I have a solution.”

Your support helps build a place where people like Liliana can find not only nourishment but the strength and resources to turn their dreams into reality.

Thank you for making that possible.

As an organization situated in Tiohtia:ke (Montreal), The Depot recognizes that it functions on unceded Indigenous territory. We aim to place social justice at the heart of our work, as a result, we feel it is crucial to be informed about the past and ongoing consequences of colonialism and its policies of attempted assimilation, which have a detrimental impact on the Indigenous heritage that valued healthy food access and culture. We are working on how to support and co-resist with Indigenous community members, advocate for Indigenous Sovereignty, and the recognition of Aboriginal and treaty rights. Although we function out of Tiothia:ke, we realize that this is a global fight. This is a living and changing document, a first step in carrying informed commitments that support Indigenous communities. We encourage all our partners and community members to work on and think about what we all can do to educate ourselves on these issues and foster a relationship with Indigenous communities that is based on facts, truth, and respect, and how it links with the goals of The Depot.
